How to Play

1

Pre-set Foundations

Before the fans are dealt, all four Aces are removed from the deck and placed in the foundations. This leaves 48 cards to be dealt into 16 fans of 3 cards each.

2

Descending Sequences

In the tableau, you can move cards onto others of the same suit in descending order (e.g., place a Jack of Hearts on a Queen of Hearts). Only the top card of a fan is playable.

3

Build Up to King

Your goal is to build the four foundation piles (starting from the pre-set Aces) up to the King, strictly following the suit of each pile.

4

The Shuffle Rule

Like its parent game, Trefoil typically allows you two reshuffles. Use these wisely to break up "dead" sequences where a lower card is trapped beneath a higher one.

Common Questions

Why is it called "Trefoil"?
The name refers to the three-card fans (resembling a trefoil or cloverleaf) that make up the tableau layout.

How does it differ from La Belle Lucie?
The primary difference is the starting point. In Trefoil, Aces are already in the foundations, reducing the number of fans from 18 to 16 and slightly increasing your early-game momentum.
