Castles in Spain Solitaire

Castles in Spain is a member of the venerable Beleaguered Castle family of solitaire games. Unlike many variants that hide cards, this game deals almost the entire deck face-up into 13 columns. It is a game of perfect information where success depends on your ability to look ahead, manage your columns, and systematically dismantle the "castle."

How to Play

1

The 13-Column Deal

Fifty-two cards are dealt into 13 columns of four cards each. All cards are face-up, though only the top card of each column is available for play.

2

Alternating Color Builds

Build cards down in descending order on the tableau. Unlike its cousin Beleaguered Castle, Castles in Spain requires building in alternating colors (e.g., a Black 7 on a Red 8).

3

Foundation Freedom

Move Aces to the four foundation piles as soon as they become available. Build the foundations up by suit from Ace through King to win the game.

4

Empty Column Logic

Clearing a column is a major milestone. In Castles in Spain, you can move any single available card into an empty column to help rearrange your stacks.

How is it different from Beleaguered Castle?
The main difference is the building rule. Beleaguered Castle allows building down regardless of suit/color, while Castles in Spain requires alternating colors, making it more challenging and strategic.

Is every game winnable?
While more solvable than some "blind" solitaire games, Castles in Spain requires high-level planning. A single misplaced card can lead to a deadlock.
