How to Play

1

The Double Deal

Carlton is played with two 52-card decks. Eight tableau columns are dealt, with each column containing progressively more cards. Aces start the eight foundation piles.

2

Descending Alternation

Build the tableau in descending order and alternating colors (e.g., a Black 10 on a Red Jack). Unlike Klondike, you can move any face-up sequence as a group.

3

The Foundation Goal

Build eight foundations up by suit from Ace to King. With two of every suit available, you have more paths to victory—but more ways to get blocked.

4

Using the Stock

Draw from the stock pile one card at a time. In Carlton, you usually only get one pass through the deck, making every move in the tableau critical.

Common Questions

How is Carlton different from Klondike?
Carlton uses two decks and allows you to move sequences that aren't perfectly built, similar to Yukon. This makes it more complex but also more rewarding for skilled players.

Can I re-deal the stock?
In standard Carlton rules, there are no re-deals. This places a high priority on exhausting all possible tableau moves before touching the stock pile.
