How to Play

1

The Objective

Avoid taking tricks that contain "penalty cards." Every Heart card is 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is worth a massive 13 points.

2

Follow the Suit

Players must follow the suit of the lead card. If you don't have that suit, you can play any other card (like a Heart) to "dump" points on others.

3

Winning the Game

The game ends when a player reaches 100 points. The player with the lowest score at that moment is crowned the winner.

Hearts Strategy

Watch the Spades

Be extremely careful with high Spades (Ace, King, Queen). If you hold them, try to get rid of them before someone bleeds the suit.

Short-Suiting

Try to empty your hand of a specific suit early. This gives you the freedom to play penalty cards when that suit is led by your opponents.

Shoot the Moon

If you take ALL 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades, you get 0 points while everyone else gets 26! It’s a high-risk, high-reward masterstroke.

Common Questions

Can I lead with Hearts?
You cannot lead a trick with a Heart until "Hearts have been broken" (meaning someone has already played a Heart because they couldn't follow suit).

What happens on the very first trick?
The player with the 2 of Clubs always leads. Crucially, no penalty cards (Hearts or the Queen of Spades) can be played on the first trick.
